Queen Sofia was photographed throughout her Majorcan holiday behind the wheel of the Peugeot iON, a zero-emission electric vehicle with a battery life of 80 miles.

She stated that her test-drive around the Majorcan capital, Palma, where the royal family holidays each summer, was “phenomenal”.

The government hopes that her jaunt will assist boost sales of electric cars in Spain, which promised to have a million on the road within four years.

Jose Luis Rodriquez Zapatero, the prime minister, has made electric car sales a centrepeice of his green agenda, hopeful to install battery top-up points in petrol stations and deserted telephone booths across the country.
