A Wisconsin auto supplier is making technology that assists automakers such as Tata in India stay flexible -- and cheap.
The factory in Gujarat, India, which will build the $2,500 Tata Nano uses technology, developed by Rockwell Automation, the Milwaukee Journal-Sentinel reports. The plant can regulate on short notice, changing to meet consumer tastes or demand levels.
The legend of these emerging countries is that they do it by cheap labor and abysmal working standards and terrible plants and abusive environments, says Keith Nosbusch, chief executive of Rockwell. These are high-tech facilities, as high-tech as they are in the U.S. and the peoples very happy to be working in them.
Despite the high-tech factory that may be manufacturing the Nano, the car is facing troubles.
Two Nanos have reportedly caught fire, one while the new owner was in the car and other on its way to be delivered. Indian media reports there may be a wiring trouble near the steering wheel.
Hopefully, with all the high-tech software Rockwell has developed for Tata, it won't take long for the automaker to pinpoint the trouble. The car is now being manufactured in a plant in Pantnagar, India, while the Gujarat plant is completed.
