A speeding car ran over an elderly man out for a morning walk close to Akshardham Temple in East Delhi on Thursday.

This incident took place on National Highway-24 around 6.30 am.

The dead, Om Dutt Chauhan, 62, had retired as a Delhi Transport Corporation bus driver last year, the police said. He survives in Pandav Nagar, just off the highway in East Delhi.

According to witnesses, so severe was the impact that the car, a BMW, turned turtle following the accident.

Alleging police inaction, locals blocked the stretch on Akshardham Chowk for almost five hours, affecting traffic movement on NH-24 till past noon.

According to a senior officer, a East Delhi-based businessman’s son, Raman Singhla, 27, was after the BMW’s wheel. Singhla’s father Babu Ram and friend Deepak Kapoor were too in the car — they were headed towards the Ghaziabad railway station when the incident happened.
